Door measurements checklist

Five minutes with a tape measure saves a second trip. Measure, photograph, then ask.

For every door

Door height, width and thickness.
Material: solid wood, board, metal or glass.
Which side the hinges are on and whether the door opens towards you or away.

For locks and handles

Backset: door edge to the centre of the handle or key hole.
Centre distance between handle and key hole.
Faceplate size of any existing mortise lock.

For cylinders

Distance from the fixing screw to the outside face of the door.
Distance from the fixing screw to the inside face.

For hinges and closers

Hinge leaf height and width.
Approximate door weight.
Space above the door and the frame depth for a closer.

Photos to take

The whole door from each side.
Each fitting close up with a ruler beside it.
Any marking on the part.
